What is BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ, is a grappling-based martial art. The central focus is the skill of taking an opponent to the ground, controlling that opponent and using techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds. It emphasises using leverage, angles and proper technique to subdue opponents. This allows smaller, weaker practitioners to defeat larger adversaries.

What is the difference between Gi and NoGi?

Gi consists of a jacket and trousers made of a sturdy fabric, similar to a traditional martial arts uniform. Gi training allows for the material to be grabbed and utilised.

NoGi does not allow gripping of the material. It involves wearing shorts and a rash guard or tight-fitting shirt, resembling more of a typical athletic outfit.

Both have their unique benefits and offer different training experiences within Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experience.

How can BJJ help my child?

Discover the exceptional benefits of BJJ for kids:

  • This discipline transcends size and athleticism, making it an ideal choice for children. By placing emphasis on technique rather than strength, children can apply skills successfully regardless of their physical attributes.

  • Experience the intellectual stimulation of learning endless techniques and combinations, making BJJ an engaging and rewarding journey for kids.

  • Not only does BJJ teach effective self-defence, but it also cultivates discipline, strategic thinking, confidence, social skills and fitness. These are powerful life tools and help to combat bullying.

  • Having fun and forming new friendships

What should my child wear to class?

For the first class we recommend shorts and a t-shirt. For Gi classes, we can provide one if your child does not have one.

After one month of attendance, we ask that you purchase your own Gi and rashguard.

How does the belt system work?

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), belt grading is used to recognize an individual's progress and skill level. Each belt represents a different level of proficiency and knowledge.

To progress through the belts, practitioners must attend classes, train regularly, and demonstrate their understanding and execution of techniques. It’s a significant achievement to progress through the ranks, marking a practitioner's growth and dedication to the art of BJJ.
